One way you can help ensure that you’re striking that balance is through diet. Specifically in the ratio of acidic to alkaline foods you consume.

Let’s pause for a quick chemistry refresher. The alkaline and acid levels in our bodies is measured by the pH scale. The scale runs from 0 to 14, with extreme alkalinity being assigned 0 and extreme acidity 14. Right in the middle is 7 – or neutral – neither acidic nor alkaline. For most of us, the blood in our veins comes in at around 7.4, or slightly alkaline (water is an exact 7). Our bodies naturally tend to be slightly alkaline because blood alkalinity aids with the processing of nitrogen, which is critical to energy production.

But what happens when we throw our pH out of balance and start becoming more acidic? A number of complex chemical reactions can take place in our bodies. We have a built-in reservoir of extra alkalis that the body throws at excess acids to try to neutralize them. But, we only have so many reserves of alkalis, and as acids build up in our bodies, they can start to contribute to cell death.

Some cells don’t die in the acidic environment, they start to adapt. These acid-tolerant cells are not normal. In fact, because of their abnormality and ability to multiply without asking your brain for permission to do so means that they have become cancer.

Treat cancer with a balanced diet

Acid buildup in the body is completely avoidable and reversible. For the most part, we are responsible for introducing acids into our bodies by consuming them through food and drink. While we can’t suggest cutting all acids out of the diet (go ahead and have another sip of coffee) we do promote a low-acid diet to keep those abnormal cells at bay.

Many nutritionists say that a good rule of thumb is to follow the 80-20 model. At least 80% of the foods you consume should be on the alkaline side of the pH scale, while no more than 20% should be from the acidic side.

Here are common foods and where they sit on the scale. (You’ll see a very obvious trend: “healthy” foods tend to be more alkaline):

MORE ACIDIC

  • Soft drinks
  • Coffee
  • Wine
  • Chocolate
  • Red Meat
  • Refined grains (cereals and pastas)
  • Refined sugars
  • Ice cream, and to a lesser extent, milk

MORE ALKALINE

  • Olive oil
  • Vegetables
  • Fruit (including citrus fruits. The particular type of acid in oranges and lemons is broken down into alkaline components by the body.)

The list is fairly simple and you can see that what you’ve always been told is a “cancer fighting diet” holds true even when you take pH into account.
