Oxygen Treatments & Therapies for Cancer

How Oxygen Therapy for Cancer Treatment Works

Oxygen therapy refers to several different forms of treatment that are designed to flood tumors and cancer cells with oxygen. Theories suggest that introducing excess oxygen into tumors can kill cancer cells and prevent cell proliferation by forcing tumors to shut down. Some studies also suggest that the oxygenation of hypoxic tumor cells may increase their sensitivity to radiation therapy and chemotherapy.

Oxygen therapies range from placing a patient within a chamber with a controlled amount of oxygen to introducing substances that contain oxygen into the tumor via injection or oral medication.

Types of Oxygen Therapy

Hydrogen Peroxide IV

Hydrogen peroxide is a compound that contains oxygen and is believed to be toxic to the cancer cell. Using intravenous hydrogen peroxide (IV) infusions, clinicians can introduce controlled levels of hydrogen peroxide into the body to potentially kill cancer cells, decreasing the progression of tumor growth.

Ozone UVB

UVB therapy involves exposing blood to ultraviolet light and reintroducing that blood back into the patient’s body. This has oxidative effects as ozone therapy and may help to increase oxygen levels.

Ozone Autohemotherapy

Ozone autohemotherapy involves the removal of the patient’s blood from their body. This blood is then injected with ozone gas to increase oxygenation before being reintroduced back into the bloodstream. This treatment is good for increasing blood flow and circulation and boosts a patient’s immune system.

Ozone Rectal Insufflations

With ozone rectal insufflation, ozone treatment is introduced to the body directly via the rectum. Theories suggest that oxygen is more easily absorbed through the walls of the rectum, potentially allowing for greater efficiency.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

A form of oxygen therapy for treating cancer is called Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT). HBO therapy involves cancer patients to be placed in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber to breathe in pure oxygen at levels greater than the normal environment. The goal of HBO treatments is to fill the blood with sufficient oxygen to repair damaged tissue and restore body function. Hyperbaric oxygen treatment could also be used as a wound healing method for infections, injured flesh, or diseases such as Alzheimer’s and HIV/AIDS.

How Oxygen Therapies Are Administered

Due to the variety and breadth of oxygen therapies available, the exact methods of administration will vary based on your own health and personal needs, as well as the tumor volume, severity, and stage of your cancer. Oxygen therapy is generally non-invasive, and most forms of this treatment can be performed safely as another option besides radiation treatment and chemotherapy.
