Autoimmune diseases are caused by an abnormal response from the body’s immune system. Essentially, the immune system attacks healthy cells and tissues instead of fighting foreign pathogens. Autoimmune diseases and symptoms vary widely—they can be mild, severe, or life-threatening. In most cases, the causes are unknown.
