Acerca de los tumores gastrointestinales
Un tumor del estroma gastrointestinal (GIST) es un tipo de sarcoma de tejido blando. Aunque pueden aparecer en cualquier parte del tracto gastrointestinal, se encuentran más comúnmente en el intestino delgado y en el estómago. Los GIST comienzan en ciertas células nerviosas del revestimiento del sistema digestivo. Estas células forman parte del sistema nervioso autónomo y controlan varios procesos digestivos, como el movimiento de alimentos a través del tracto gastrointestinal.
Los tumores gastrointestinales son más comunes en personas de entre 50 y 70 años y casi nunca se presentan en personas menores de 40 años. Sin embargo, pueden ocurrir potencialmente en personas de cualquier edad.
Causas y factores de riesgo
Al igual que otras formas de cáncer, los tumores gastrointestinales son causados por mutaciones en el ADN que provocan que las células cancerosas crezcan sin control. Esto eventualmente resulta en crecimientos, o tumores, que pueden propagarse a otras partes del cuerpo. La causa exacta de esta mutación no se conoce ni se entiende actualmente.
Si bien la herencia puede desempeñar un papel en el desarrollo de células cancerosas en el tracto gastrointestinal, la mayoría de los GIST son esporádicos, lo que significa que no se heredan. Ciertos síndromes genéticos hereditarios pueden contribuir al riesgo de desarrollar GIST. El síndrome GIST familiar primario lleva a un mayor riesgo de tumores gastrointestinales y puede dar lugar a que los GIST se desarrollen a una edad más temprana de lo normal. El síndrome de Carney-Stratakis y la neurofibromatosis tipo 1 también pueden aumentar el riesgo de desarrollar tumores gastrointestinales.
Hasta ahora se conocen muy pocos factores de riesgo para los tumores gastrointestinales. Como se ha mencionado, la edad puede desempeñar un papel, ya que los tumores gastrointestinales son más comunes en personas mayores de 50 años.
Detección temprana, diagnóstico y estadificación
Los tumores gastrointestinales más pequeños generalmente no causan síntomas y pueden crecer tan lentamente que no presentan efectos graves. Los GIST más grandes suelen notarse cuando un paciente vomita sangre o tiene sangre en las heces. Otros signos y síntomas comunes de los tumores gastrointestinales incluyen:
- Dolor abdominal
- Un notable crecimiento en el abdomen
- Anemia
- Náuseas y vómitos
- Pérdida de peso involuntaria
- Pérdida de apetito
- Problemas para tragar

El diagnóstico de los tumores gastrointestinales comienza con preguntas acerca de su historial médico y un examen físico general para comprobar si hay crecimientos en el abdomen. A partir de ahí, su médico puede realizar exploraciones como una tomografía computarizada o una endoscopia para obtener una mejor visión de su tracto gastrointestinal. Su médico también puede ordenar una biopsia, que es la mejor manera de saber con seguridad si una masa anormal es un GIST.
Después de un diagnóstico positivo, el médico procederá al proceso de estadificación. La etapa determina si el cáncer se ha propagado a otras partes del cuerpo y ayuda al médico a determinar el mejor curso de acción. La estadificación de los tumores gastrointestinales involucra el sistema TNM junto con etapas que van de la I a la IV. Cuanto más bajo sea el número, menos se ha extendido el cáncer.

Aunque la quimioterapia y otros tratamientos clínicos típicos son comunes en el tratamiento de las células cancerosas, los GIST no responden a la quimioterapia. Dr. Bautista received formal medical training from Baja California State University in Mexico. He also holds a Masters in Nutrition from the same university. He has worked as a Director for alternative medicine hospitals. Early in his career, Dr. Bautista became interested in alternative cancer therapy and treatments and has studied alternative treatments extensively around the world.

Costs and Travel Arrangements
A typical three-week treatment program costs $18,995USD, and includes all therapies, diagnostics, and a healthy, organic, breakfast and lunch (+2 juices/smoothies) Monday – Saturday. Room and other board, travel costs, surgeries, and blood transfusions are not included. Some very specific therapies may not be included. Depending on your stage and condition, you may need six weeks of treatment or more.

We accept major credit cards (some fees may apply), personal and cashier’s checks, wire transfers, and cash. You can also easily PAY ONLINE.
Airfare is not included in the program cost; however, transfers to and from the airport (Tijuana or San Diego) and transportation between our center and your hotel are included.
You may fly into Tijuana, Mexico or San Diego, California. Wewill make arrangements to meet and pick you up at either airport. We are only 25 minutes from the San Diego International Airport. You may also drive to the center. When you schedule your treatment, we will provide detailed driving directions.

If you are undergoing outpatient treatment, you will need to stay in a local hotel or other lodging option during your treatment. We are located near several quality hotels in Tijuana, and have arranged special rates for our patients.
